Wooden deck 1:700 for the battleship Bismarck is a self-adhesive veneer with pre-printed plank laying. It takes over from the engraved plastic deck surface with real wood. Cut for the Meng PS-003 kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory for a ship kit, not the model itself. The deck shapes are cut from a thin wooden veneer with pre-printed plank laying and an adhesive layer on the back, so they are laid straight onto the plastic deck. The set is cut for the Meng PS-003 kit; check before buying that it matches yours.
The difference is not only in the material but above all in the scale of the detail. An injection mold can engrave a seam between planks only down to a certain minimum width and depth; any finer and the plastic would not reach into it and the engraving would not fill. In 1:700 scale that means a plastic deck has planks noticeably wider and seams deeper than reality would call for, and the eye reads it as a floor of heavy boards rather than planks. Veneer gets around that limit, because the pattern is printed rather than engraved and can go below the line a mold cannot manage. Added to that is the grain of the wood itself, which reacts to light differently from smooth plastic: the surface changes subtly as the model is turned, and no coat of paint can imitate that.
A wooden deck goes well with photo-etched railings and ladders; once the deck area is convincing, coarse plastic coamings and railings become the most conspicuous weak point of the model. Fit photo-etched parts only after the veneer is glued down. If you use super glue, work with a minimum of material and apply it to the photo-etched part, not to the deck; wood soaks the glue up and a dark stain appears around the joint.
This is an accessory, not a model. The ship kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
