A model of the American Knox class escort frigate in 1:700 scale in the so-called detail up version, that is in a box complemented by parts for a finer rendering of the superstructure and the fittings. The designation in the name means that it is a richer variant than the basic release; the exact make-up of the package is stated on the box. The model is intended to be glued and painted; it is not a finished product.
In the 1970s and 1980s the Knox class frigates made up a numerous group of US Navy escort ships aimed above all at anti-submarine warfare. A high smooth bow, a single massive superstructure with the funnel combined with the mast and a long stern with space for a helicopter are characteristic of them. Power came from a single shaft, which gave the ships an economical but not very flexible maneuvering profile. A number of units later served in the navies of other states.
First decide whether you are building the model full-hull or in a waterline version — the way it is cut and set into a base affects the whole procedure. Glue the hull and the decks on a flat surface and keep checking that the structure is not warping. Fit the fine parts of the superstructure and the mast only after the base shade has been sprayed, otherwise they are hard to paint over. If the package holds photo-etched parts, fold them over a metal edge and glue them with cyanoacrylate in the smallest possible amount; at this scale an excess of glue immediately floods the detail around it. Set the deck off against the hull with a darker tone, and once dry apply a light wash to bring out the fittings and dose rust streaks very sparingly — in 1:700 scale heavy weathering looks unconvincing.
