About product

Turned metal gun barrels for the J, K and N class destroyers, 1:700 (Flyhawk)

An add-on set of turned metal gun barrels in 1:700 scale intended for models of the British J, K and N class destroyers. It is not a kit of a ship or a standalone model, but a replacement for the plastic barrels, which at this scale never look entirely convincing. A plastic part has a parting groove left by the mold, after cleanup it stops being round and the muzzle of the barrel tends to be solid, which shows on the finished model more than one would expect on such a small part.

What metal barrels change

Turned metal is perfectly cylindrical along its whole length, it has no seams and it needs no sanding that would thin it down. On parts of this type the muzzle tends to be drilled out, so the barrel does not look like a skewer. A metal part also stands up to handling better, it does not bend when the model is put down and on an unintended touch it does not snap as easily as a thin plastic barrel. On a model in 1:700 scale it is one of the few modifications that tells even from the ordinary viewing distance at a display case.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrels off with a sharp knife as close as possible to the shield or to the body of the turret and level the surface. Drill an opening matching the diameter of the pin of the metal barrel into the remaining stub or straight into the turret with a micro drill bit, and fit it dry before you glue it. Use super glue in a really small amount, applied with the tip of a toothpick. Degrease the metal before painting and spray a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint will rub off during handling. Work over a mat or a cloth, as a tiny barrel that falls on the floor is very hard to find. If you are still building the ship model, it is practical to fit the barrels only after the superstructures have been painted.

Who the set is for

  • For modelers of warships in 1:700 scale.
  • For builders of the British J, K and N class destroyers.
  • For those who want a quick increase in detail without extensive modification.
  • For display and competition builds looked at close up.

This is an add-on set for building a model, not a model of a ship. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. The box contains only the metal barrels. The kit, the paints and the glue have to be obtained separately.

Turned metal is exactly cylindrical, it has no parting groove left by the mold and it needs no sanding that would thin it down. At the same time it stands up to handling better.

Cut the plastic barrel off, level the surface and drill an opening for the pin with a micro drill bit. It is bonded with a small amount of super glue.

Yes. Degrease it and spray a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
