A set of turned metal barrels in 1:700 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a kit of a ship but a detail accessory for modelers who want to replace coarse plastic barrels with accurate metal ones. The set is intended for the Italian battleships of the Littorio class and it covers the main armament of 381 mm caliber, the secondary battery of 152 mm caliber and the dual-purpose guns of 90 mm caliber. Turned metal offers the correct circular cross section, a fine tapering build of the barrel and a drilled muzzle.
The Italian battleships of the Littorio class, that is the Littorio, the Vittorio Veneto and the Roma, were among the most modern European battleships of the Second World War. They carried nine guns of 381 mm caliber in three triple turrets, a secondary battery of 152 mm caliber and dual-purpose guns of 90 mm caliber in stabilized mountings. The long slender barrels of the main battery are the most noticeable feature of the silhouette in 1:700 scale, so swapping them for turned metal shows on a model at once.
Cut the plastic barrel off as close to the mounting as possible with a sharp scalpel and level the surface with a file. Drill the hole for the pin of the metal barrel with a micro drill gradually, in small steps, so that the thin plastic does not tear. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in a really small amount, as any excess shows at once in this scale. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a base coat intended for metals, otherwise neither acrylic nor enamel will hold. Fit the barrels only once the superstructures have been painted, so that they do not get bent while the model is handled.
This is a detail accessory, not a complete kit of a ship. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.
