About product

Set of barrels for the German destroyers of type 1936A 1:700 — Aber

This is a set of turned metal barrels in 1:700 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a kit of a ship but a detail accessory: the turned barrels replace the plastic parts and bring a perfectly circular cross section, the right slenderness and a drilled muzzle, none of which injection-molded plastic reaches in this scale. The package holds five barrels of 150 mm caliber, eight barrels of 37 mm caliber and ten barrels of 37 mm caliber of the later M42 pattern.

The real subject

The German destroyers of type 1936A became known under the nickname Narvik. They were large destroyers of the Second World War which were the first in the Kriegsmarine to carry a main gun armament of 150 mm caliber instead of the usual 127 mm. They were backed by light anti-aircraft armament of 37 mm caliber, whose older semi-automatic pieces were replaced during the war by the automatic M42 pattern. It is precisely this combination of calibers that makes the fine barrels the most noticeable detail of the whole model.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrel off as close to the mounting as possible with a sharp scalpel and level the surface with a file. Drill the hole for the pin of the metal barrel with a micro drill gradually, in small steps, so that the thin plastic does not tear. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in a really small amount, as any excess shows at once in this scale. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a base coat intended for metals, otherwise neither acrylic nor enamel will hold. Fit the barrels only once the superstructures have been painted, so that they do not get bent while the model is handled.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who want to replace coarse plastic barrels with accurate metal ones
  • More experienced modelers used to working with small parts and a micro drill
  • Collectors of German surface ships of the Second World War

This is a detail accessory, not a complete kit of a ship. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a set of turned metal barrels that will replace the plastic parts on a destroyer model under way or already built.

The barrels of the main gun armament of 150 mm caliber and the barrels of the light anti-aircraft guns of 37 mm caliber, in two forms including the later M42 pattern.

Cut the plastic barrel off with a scalpel, drill the hole with a micro drill and glue the metal part in with a small drop of cyanoacrylate glue.

Yes. Degrease the metal first and lay down a base coat intended for metals. Only on that will acrylic and enamel paint hold; otherwise it wipes off while the model is handled.
