An unassembled and unpainted plastic kit from the science fiction range in which Suyata carries the silhouettes of historic naval vessels over into a space treatment. It is not a documentary replica of the submarine but a free imaginative reworking with added propulsion and superstructure elements. The 1:700 scale matches the classic ship scale and keeps the model at a sensible size for a display case. The number of parts and the contents of the package are stated on the packaging of the kit.
The designation I-400 belonged to the first vessel of a Japanese class of large submarines of the late Second World War, which were the largest submarines in the world in their day. A characteristic feature was a cylindrical hangar on deck and a catapult on the bow, intended for the floatplanes carried aboard — the vessel thus combined a submarine with an aircraft carrier. The space stylization keeps to that silhouette, that is, a long hull with a prominent hangar and an unusually tall conning tower, and only adds elements that never existed on the real vessel.
Glue the hull with thin cement for plastic and sand the lower seam carefully, because at this scale every irregularity shows. Lay the primer down in a thin coat so that the fine deck detail is not lost. With a science fiction treatment it pays to combine a darker base shade with stronger accents on the propulsion elements and the edges; a dark wash in the recesses and a restrained dry brush will bring it to life. The model works well on a stand without a water surface — that is precisely what sets it apart from a conventional ship build.
