A plastic kit of the Japanese battleship Kongo from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The model is offered as full hull, that is, with the whole hull from the keel up to the superstructures, so the shape of the underwater part and the transition to the waterline also stand out. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread for warships and makes it possible to build a collection in which the sizes of the vessels are comparable with one another.
The Kongo was built in a British shipyard and entered service in 1913 as a battlecruiser; she was the last Japanese capital ship ordered abroad. In the 1920s and 1930s she went through two extensive reconstructions, after which she had new boilers, a lengthened hull, a prominent pagoda mast and a speed of over thirty knots, which made her a fast battleship able to escort aircraft carriers. The main armament consisted of eight 356 mm guns in four twin turrets. In the Second World War she took part in operations in the southwest Pacific including the night bombardment of the airfield on Guadalcanal and the fighting off the Philippines. She was sunk in November 1944 by torpedoes from an American submarine.
The pagoda mast is the most prominent and at the same time the finest assembly on Japanese battleships; build it level by level, let it dry thoroughly and fit it only after the hull has been painted. Leave the gun turrets movable or glue them only at the end, as the deck is then easier to clean up and paint. Wooden decks stand out when a thin wash into the joints and a dry brush are used. Spray the underwater part separately and mask the line of the waterline; on a full-hull version it is the most visible detail.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
