An aftermarket accessory for a ship kit, not a model. The set is cut from a thin wooden veneer with pre-printed plank laying; the back carries an adhesive layer, so the part is laid straight onto the plastic deck of the model and takes over from its engraved surface. The cut matches the Aoshima 051238 kit, so check before buying that this is the one you have.
On a battleship with a markedly narrowed bow that rises upward, the deck does not meet the hull in one plane: over the last few centimeters before the tip the area rises slightly and at the same time narrows into a sharp wedge. Veneer is a flat material, so it has to be shaped a little at that point. Work in such a way that the forward section is the last to be uncovered: seat the straight middle part of the deck first, and only then press the veneer toward the bow gradually, from the axis out to the sides in small steps, so that the surplus material is spread evenly and does not form one visible wave on one side.
It helps to moisten the forward part of the veneer very lightly before laying it, by wiping the face with a damp cloth; the grain gives for a moment. Do not overdo it, as soaked veneer loses its shape and the adhesive layer on the back may be spoiled. Another option is to let the part rest for a while on a rounded object so that it remembers the shape. Press down with a blunt tool through a strip of paper; a sharp tool edge would leave a mark in the soft wood.
