Artwox Model supplies this set as an aftermarket accessory to a plastic kit of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington CV-16 in 1:700 scale. It is neither a model nor a kit. A thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive back will replace the plastic flight deck, that is the area which on carriers determines the overall impression of a model more than anything else.
The USS Lexington CV-16 was an aircraft carrier of the Essex class, that is of the type that formed the basis of the American carrier forces in the Second World War. Characteristic is the long wood-covered flight deck, the island superstructure on the starboard side and the open forward section of the hangar deck. The ship has been preserved to the present day as a museum vessel, so rich photographic documentation exists for those who want to fine-tune a model down to the detail.
A self-adhesive base is convenient, but it gives no second chance. That is why it pays to mark the axis and a transverse line on the deck in advance, by which you will align the veneer. Never press a glued area down with a fingernail or a hard tool, as the imprint stays permanently visible; use a flat finger through a soft cloth. If a small bubble does appear after all, pierce it with the tip of a new blade along the gap between the planks and force the air out, as a puncture in the place of a gap will not be visible. Fine-tune the edges at the island and the elevators by trimming. Painting is not necessary; a dark wash into the gaps and a light matte varnish are enough.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
