This item is not a model of the ship but an aftermarket accessory to a plastic kit. Artwox Model cuts the deck parts from thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks marked on it, and the back is self-adhesive. Once it is glued onto the plastic deck, a model in 1:700 scale gains a surface with the natural pattern of wood. The deck is cut for the Trumpeter 05742 kit.
The USS New Orleans was the lead ship of the class of the same name of American heavy cruisers, which came about still under the limits of the interwar naval treaties. The main armament consisted of nine 203 mm guns in three triple turrets. In November 1942 the ship suffered heavy damage to the forward part of her hull at the Battle of Tassafaronga, but she managed to stay afloat, reach repair and later return to service.
The order of work is the key. Spray the hull and the superstructures and let them cure thoroughly before you reach for the veneer; painting around glued-on wood means masking, which on removal of the tape often tears the veneer. You will manage the transition between the deck and the side of the hull cleanly by first spraying the edge of the deck too in the color of the hull and then laying the veneer exactly on the edge. Anyone who wants perfect edges can fine-tune a thin line along the side with a dark shade after gluing, using a fine brush.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit. The kit itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
