About product

Fine railings for the US Navy 1:700 - a photo-etched set from Tetra Model Works

A photo-etched set of railings in 1:700 scale, deriving in shape from the practice of the US Navy in the period of the Second World War. It is not a model of a ship but an accessory: from the sheet you cut out the lengths you need and with them you either replace the coarse plastic outlines of the deck or add railings where the kit does not have them at all. The designation Fine refers to the finer release of the stanchions and the wires, which in such a small scale looks noticeably more faithful than thicker photo-etch.

The real subject

A deck railing on a real ship is a structure of stanchions and taut wires only a few centimeters thick; converted to 1:700 scale it is a fraction of a millimeter. That is exactly why it cannot be done in injection-molded plastic - it is either missing or senselessly thick. The number of wires between the stanchions differs from ship to ship according to the deck and the period, so a railing tends to be one of the first details that an experienced builder replaces on a ship model.

Building and painting tips

Glue the railings only after the deck and the hull have been painted, otherwise the area beneath them cannot be reached. Cut the strips off with a small margin, offer them up dry and only then apply cyanoacrylate glue - best of all with the tip of a wire in small drops, or a thin type which runs in by capillary action. Shape the curves at the bow and the stern gradually around a cylindrical object, not by breaking them. They are best painted by spraying freehand in a bundle while still on the sheet, with the additions then only retouched. At the end a thin wash helps, so that the railing does not visually merge with the superstructure.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of warships in 1:700 scale who are bothered by missing or coarse railings
  • Modelers focused on the US Navy of the Second World War
  • Competition builders and creators of display-case installations
  • More experienced modelers who can manage small photo-etch and cyanoacrylate glue

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted and is intended to complete a separately purchased ship kit. Glue, paints and plastic parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The set contains only photo-etched railings with which you complete a separately purchased ship kit in 1:700 scale.

The railing is shaped according to American practice. It can be used elsewhere too, but the spacing of the stanchions and the number of wires need not correspond, which is why the maker also offers a version for the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Only after the deck and the superstructures have been painted and the decals applied. Under a finished railing the surface can practically no longer be repainted or cleaned.

The surest way is to spray the strips while still on the sheet, and after gluing only to retouch with a brush. Dose the cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest possible drops.
