Old Maps, part two — printed old maps for a diorama

The second sheet in the range of printed maps from ETA diorama. Like the first part it is printed paper, not a kit and not a waterslide decal, and according to the name it is intended for 1:72, 1:35 and 1:24 scale. The sheet is therefore not tied to a single scale — you choose the size according to the scene you are putting it in.

The map as an element of the composition

A map spread open draws the eye, because it is light, flat and has a different character from the vehicles around it. You can use that: put it where you want the viewer to look first, typically in the middle of a group of figures or on the hood of the vehicle the scene is built around. If, on the other hand, you do not want the map to overpower the main model, leave it folded, partly covered by a figure's hand or tucked under another object. In a small scale choose smaller designs; in a larger one you can afford an open format.

Working the paper, weathering and varnish

Tear the edges rather than cutting them — a torn edge looks more natural on an old map. Suggest the creases dry over a blunt edge and then flatten the paper again. Glue in spots only, with PVA or matte glue, so that the map stays slightly wavy. For aging, use a hint of ocher or coffee color along the edges, a weak wash into the creases and light stippling in a dark shade to suggest stains. Finish with matte varnish; it brings the sheen of the print into line with the model and lets you add pigment or dust afterwards. A map that is being held will keep its shape if you back it from behind with thin foil.
