About product

British Camel Corps WWI, figures 1:72 from Strelets

A set of figures in 1:72 scale devoted to the British camel corps from the period of the First World War. Besides the characters it contains the riding animals as well, so from it you will build a whole patrol or column, not just a foot addition. It is made by the firm Strelets; the castings are of soft plastic of a uniform color and are supplied unpainted and unassembled.

The real subject

On the Middle Eastern and North African battlefields of the First World War the British army ran into terrain where both wheeled and horse transport failed. A camel carried a load, stood up to long marches without water and managed a sandy surface, so units on camels became practical reconnaissance and movement formations. The fighting from them was as a rule done dismounted, with the animal serving mainly for movement. For a modeler it is a subject with a very characteristic silhouette that cannot be mistaken for anything else.

Building and painting tips

The camels are decisive with this set: they are larger than the figures and draw the eye first. Paint them separately, ideally from sand and light brown toward lighter transitions on the neck and the belly, and accent the coat on the humps with a dry brush. Set the harnesses and the load apart with brown leather and canvas in a khaki shade. The riders' uniforms keep rather to light desert tones; then add the contrast with a dark wash into the folds, not with black paint. Make the base under the scene from fine sand and apply the same fine dust in the form of a dry pigment to the animals' legs and to the figures' boots as well, so that the scene holds together. Before painting, wash the plastic with detergent and prime it, and fix it at the end with matte clear.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building desert dioramas from the First World War
  • collectors of 1:72 figures looking for unusual mounted formations
  • modelers who want to practice painting animals
  • players of tabletop games with units on the Middle Eastern battlefield

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, the riding animals are part of the set. The number of pieces is stated on the packaging of the set.

With figures of this kind the riders tend to be separate parts that are seated on the animal. The exact division of the parts will be shown by the sprue once unpacked.

Start from sand or light brown, lighten the transitions on the neck and the belly and run a dry brush over the humps. Use a dark wash only gently, otherwise the animal will turn gray.

Yes. 1:72 scale is common with models of hardware from the same period as well, so a scene can be combined without difficulty.
