About product

A British cone tent Mark 5 in 1:72 scale

A scenic accessory of the Metallic Details brand for dioramas in 1:72 scale. The subject is a cone tent of the British Army designated Mark 5 — a circular canvas carried by a single central pole and guyed to the ground around its perimeter. This type of shelter served with overseas garrisons for the accommodation of the men and for field support. The product is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft; it is a standalone element for the base of a scene.

Why a cone tent transforms a scene

A cone tent has a different role from low shelters for one man. It is tall and rounded, and in a small scale it works as a dominant feature which balances the horizontal mass of a vehicle or an aircraft. At the same time its rounded shape reflects light in continuous smooth transitions, so the scene does not give a flat impression. That is exactly why it suits being the standalone center of a small vignette with a few figures as well.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the accessory in lukewarm water with dish soap before painting; mold release agent stays on cast parts and paint does not hold on it. Check whether any remainder of a casting block is left anywhere and sand any marks down with fine sandpaper. Canvas fades quickly in a warm climate, so reach for a light sand or cream shade, not for a deep khaki. A spherical surface is painted differently from a flat one: spray the top of the tent a shade lighter and leave the lower third darker; that creates natural volume. Vertical streaks of dirt drawn from the top down with a soft brush will suggest rain and dust; let the wash run only into the seams and the folds at ground level. Make the guy lines running from the edge of the roof to the pegs from the thinnest thread painted over. Seat the tent on the base with superglue or white glue and mask the perimeter with soil.

Who the accessory is for

  • builders of dioramas and vignettes in 1:72 scale
  • modelers looking for a dominant feature of height in a flat scene
  • anyone interested in British overseas and field subjects
  • everyone who wants to build credible support around equipment

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, figures and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a standalone scenic accessory for a diorama. It does not hold equipment, figures or a base; those are obtained separately.

Light sand or cream shades look more faithful than a deep khaki, because canvas fades quickly in the sun. Spray the top lighter and leave the lower part darker.

The packaging does not state them among the contents, but they will help the scene a great deal. The simplest way is the thinnest thread painted over, stretched from the edge of the roof to pegs in the terrain.

Yes. Seating and painting it are simple in themselves; only the choice of shade and the dusting of the lower hem, so that the tent grows out of the ground, are more demanding.
