A photo-etched metal set intended for building dioramas in 1:72 scale. It represents a German checkpoint, that is the assembly of elements built at the entrances to compounds, on bridges and at road closures during the Second World War. The set is not a model of equipment; it is an accessory of scenery that sets your vehicles or figures into a meaningful environment. Photo-etched metal is an advantage for these elements, because barriers, posts and signboards have a small cross section in reality, which cannot be molded faithfully in plastic.
A diorama stands or falls on whether the viewer has something from which to put the story of the scene together. A vehicle on a base on its own looks static, whereas a checkpoint immediately establishes the place and the situation. The set can be used as a self-contained whole by a road, or as part of a larger scene with a building, a fence and a roadway. The 1:72 scale corresponds to the usual scale of military vehicles and figures, so the set is easy to combine with other diorama accessories of the same scale.
Separate the parts with a scalpel against a hard surface and bend them in a photo-etch bending tool or over the edge of a steel ruler. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger surfaces a drop of thicker gel helps. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a metal primer. With diorama elements it pays to paint in layers: a base shade, a dark wash in the corners, a dry brush on the edges and finally fine dust pigments at the foot of the posts, so that the element blends into the terrain. A restrained suggestion of corrosion and scuffed paint gives the scene a used look.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, a base and figures are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
