About product

F-15J Eagle 306 SQ 35th Anniversary 1:72 — Hasegawa, limited edition

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese F-15J fighter in 1:72 scale from Hasegawa. It is a limited boxing built on proven tooling, whose main added value is a decal sheet with a special anniversary finish. The sheet holds the markings of a machine of the 306th Squadron of the 6th Wing of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in the anniversary finish for the 35 years of the unit (Komatsu Air Base, 2016), and also the ceremonial finish of a machine of the 303rd Squadron from an air show at the same base. The finished model has a length of 267 mm and a span of 179 mm. Limited editions are usually not reprinted, so availability tends to be limited in time.

The real subject

The F-15J is the Japanese version of the heavy twin-engined F-15 Eagle fighter, built under license for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. It serves as the main means of air defense and is in service with a number of fighter squadrons, among them at Komatsu Air Base. The type is known for its long range, high rate of climb and exceptional load-carrying capacity on its stores; in Japanese service it has gone through several programs to upgrade its avionics and armament. Ceremonial finishes for unit anniversaries are a long-standing tradition in Japanese aviation — they usually appear on a single machine and are worn only for a limited time, which makes them a popular and widely built subject.

Building and painting tips

The key to the result with this boxing is the base under the decals. Finish the cockpit and close the fuselage, fill and sand the joints carefully, and restore any engraved lines lost in the sanding. Spray the base with an airbrush over a primer and apply a continuous gloss clear coat before the decals — otherwise the large-area anniversary decals will silver. Lay the decals down in sections and use a decal softener so that they settle into the engraved lines; let them dry thoroughly between the layers. Once they are sealed, unify the surface with a semi-matte or matte varnish according to the character of the subject. Bring out the panel lines with a thin wash only sparingly, so that the ceremonial finish stays clean.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers focused on modern jet aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and its anniversary finishes
  • Collectors of limited editions
  • Modelers who dare to take on an extensive decal scheme

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a special boxing with a decal sheet for an anniversary finish. Editions like this are usually not reprinted, so they tend to be available only for a limited time.

The anniversary machine of the 306th Squadron of the 6th Wing for the 35 years of the unit, and a ceremonially finished machine of the 303rd Squadron, both from Komatsu Air Base in 2016.

A length of 267 mm and a span of 179 mm according to the maker's figures.

Large-area decals call for a continuous gloss base and a decal softener, otherwise they silver and will not settle into the engraved lines.
