An injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese maker Hasegawa in a limited edition. It differs from the ordinary boxing above all in its decal sheet: it carries the special finish of a machine of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force with striking artwork on the nose, of the kind used for anniversaries and ceremonial occasions. The finished model is roughly 27 centimeters long with a span of just under 18 centimeters. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The F-15J is the Japanese license-built version of the American twin-engine F-15 Eagle fighter, built by Mitsubishi. It is a heavy interceptor intended to win air superiority: a pair of powerful engines, a large wing area and a capable radar make it an aircraft with exceptional climb and range. In the Japan Air Self-Defense Force the F-15J has formed the backbone of the fighter force since the 1980s and it serves above all to protect the airspace over the Japanese islands. Squadrons equipped with the type traditionally decorate one of their machines with a striking temporary paint scheme, and it is just such an aircraft that is the subject of this edition.
Finish the cockpit and try the glazing dry before the fuselage halves are glued together. Japanese Eagles wear a two-tone gray camouflage: spray the transitions freehand with an airbrush and leave the boundary between the shades soft. Before the large-area decals of the special finish go on, spray a gloss clear coat: on a matte surface air stays trapped under a decal and a milky veil appears. Apply large decals in sections, with plenty of water and softener, so that they settle into the engraved lines. Finally unify the surface with a satin varnish. Paint the pylons and the external tanks separately and fit them only at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
