Nine photo-reconnaissance Mustangs of an American reconnaissance group that carried cameras instead of bombs over the Philippines and Ie Shima in 1945.
Responsibility details are not available.
The reconnaissance version of the famous fighter was not to carry bombs but lenses. Oblique and vertical cameras were built into the rear of the fuselage behind the cockpit, and their windows can be seen from outside as small rectangles below the national insignia. The aircraft kept all its armament and performance, so if the pilot met the enemy he did not have to defend himself by running alone.
Nine machines from one theater. All the subjects belonged to two squadrons of one tactical reconnaissance group operating in the Philippines and on the island of Ie Shima in the last year of the war in the Pacific. Three of the options carry the name of a pilot who entered history with a single morning flight at the beginning of 1945: in a fight with a Japanese formation he was credited, according to the reports of the time, with seven kills and was awarded the highest American military decoration for it. The sheet captures his machine in the rank of captain as well as after his promotion.
What it suits and what is missing. The package holds the decals for 1:72 scale only. The reconnaissance versions differ from the ordinary fighter in the camera windows, and it therefore pays to check whether the kit has them; some offer them as a transparent part, with others the openings have to be cut out. The natural metal finish of most of the subjects is demanding on the base: a smooth glossy surface belongs under the decals, otherwise the edges will show as flat rectangles.
