About product

Percival Vega Gull (military service) 1:72 — Dora Wings

This boxing of the kit of the British touring aircraft Percival Vega Gull is aimed at the machines that ended up in military service — that is aircraft taken from civil operation for communications, courier and transport duties. It is an injection-molded plastic model in 1:72 scale; the package holds both gray and clear injection-molded parts and a decal sheet with military markings. Dora Wings is a Ukrainian maker that concentrates on aircraft of the interwar era.

The real subject

The Vega Gull was a single-engined cantilever low-wing monoplane of mostly wooden construction; it first flew in the autumn of 1935 and followed on from the smaller three-seat Gull type. The enclosed cabin took a pilot and three passengers, the wings could be folded back for storage, the landing gear was fixed with a tail wheel and power came from an inverted inline six-cylinder de Havilland Gipsy Six. After the Second World War broke out a number of civil machines were impressed and repainted in military colors; they flew mainly as communications and courier aircraft and carried officers between bases. A smaller number of Vega Gulls also served with foreign users. The type became the design basis for the later military Percival Proctor, which was already produced in large series directly for the needs of the Royal Air Force.

Building and painting tips

The model is short-run in character — dry-fit the parts first and level the mating surfaces as needed. Glue with liquid cement for polystyrene, which runs into the joint by capillary action. The cabin glazing is large and conspicuous, so mask the frames and spray in thin coats. Military schemes tend to be matte and broken into fields, which tempts you into weathering — but on a communications aircraft choose a restrained approach, as a fine accenting of the engraved lines and light scuffing of the leading edges is quite enough. Apply the decals over a gloss base and seal them at the end with a matte varnish.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of British communications and courier aircraft of the Second World War period
  • modelers with experience of short-run molds
  • anyone interested in the Percival Gull, Vega Gull and Proctor development line
  • builders of display cases on the theme of auxiliary and reserve air arms

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The plastic parts come from the same mold; what differs is the contents of the decal sheet and the choice of schemes. The military boxing covers machines in the colors of the armed forces, the civil one aircraft of private owners.

The impressed machines were used mainly for communications, courier and transport duties, that is for the fast carriage of people and mail between bases, not for combat.

Medium to higher. It is a short-run model that calls for dry-fitting the parts, fitting them together and more careful work with putty than an ordinary mass-produced kit.

No, the model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories have to be bought separately.
