1:72 Sarmatians is a set of unpainted historical figures of Sarmatians in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Strelets-R. The figures of soft plastic are intended for painting and for completing dioramas from the period of antiquity and the migration of peoples.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set widens the historical figure line of Strelets-R with the theme of steppe warriors. The figures are supplied unpainted and in soft plastic, which tolerates handling well but calls for more careful preparation of the surface. In 1:72 scale this is a typical addition to a scene, not a kit, so the set will find use mainly in a diorama, on a gaming table or in a display case beside other sets from antiquity.
The Sarmatians were Iranian-speaking nomadic tribes which from roughly the third century BC moved about the steppes north of the Black Sea and gradually came into contact with the Roman world. Their military reputation rested on cavalry, especially on the heavily armored riders of the cataphract type, with which not only the rider but often the horse as well was protected. Characteristic were scale or lamellar armor, a long lance and a long sword, and with the lighter riders a bow. Sarmatian armament and tactics influenced the later cavalry of the region as well.
Before painting, wash the figures in lukewarm water with detergent and remove the flash and the parting seams. Apply primer onto soft plastic in thin layers, as a heavy layer would fill in the fine relief of the armor. It is precisely scale armor that is the main ornament of this theme, so use a darker metallic base on it, a light dry brush once dry and finally a dark toning coat, which will bring out the individual scales. Leather parts and fabrics hold a scene together when you keep them in muted earthy shades. Paint the horses separately from the riders and let them dry in the position in which you will then join them, so that the saddles fit them.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
