A kit of the large amphibious Albatross flying boat in the SHU-16B version, that is in the anti-submarine configuration with an extended wing and added search equipment. According to the name the package is focused on machines in the service of Spain and Chile. The model is in 1:72 scale and is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The number of parts, the number of decal schemes and the exact contents of the package are given by the instructions supplied with the kit.
The Albatross was a twin-engine amphibian with a high-mounted wing, piston radial engines and retractable landing gear, which allowed operation from water and from an ordinary runway alike. It came about as a rescue and patrol machine, and in that role it earned a reputation as an exceptionally rugged aircraft, able to operate even from a rough sea. The versions designated SHU-16B were adapted for anti-submarine patrol: they received an extended wing, search radar and further search equipment. In this guise they served a number of foreign users, among them Spain and Chile, and in many countries they stayed in service long after being retired by the original user.
On a flying boat most of the work is on the fuselage — the long hull bottom has pronounced longitudinal joints that have to be filled and sanded carefully, so that the transitions read as a single piece. Check the balance: large models with a high-mounted wing are apt to sit down on the tail, so put weight in the nose before you close the fuselage. Finish the engine nacelles and the landing gear bays separately and attach them only after painting. Mask the canopy glazing and the side windows, whether with tape or with a ready-made masking set. Spray the base shades with an airbrush; on naval patrol machines a discreet wash into the panel lines suits, with only moderate emphasis on wear around the entrances and the walkways on the wing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
