The real subject

The ISU-122 was a Soviet heavy self-propelled gun used both as a tank destroyer and against fortifications. It was created by fitting the powerful 122 mm A-19 gun into a fully armored superstructure on the chassis of the heavy IS series tank. Thanks to the large caliber its shell had a destructive effect on armored vehicles and field fortifications alike, and the vehicle proved itself in the closing battles of the Second World War during the advance to the west. It was built alongside the related ISU-152, with which it shared the same chassis and armored fighting compartment.

Building and painting tips

On a self-propelled gun it pays to assemble and paint the running gear, the road wheels and the tracks before the hull is closed up; in the small 1:72 scale work with a sharp knife and thin glue so that the tiny parts do not suffer. Glue the plastic parts with thin modeling cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting and spray the base color with an airbrush in thin coats. Volume comes from picking out the edges with a dry brush, dark washes in the recesses and pigments for dust and mud effects on the running gear and tracks.
