A small accessory set in modeling resin for a plastic model of the reconnaissance Spitfire PR Mk XIX in 1:72 scale. It concerns the oil tank and its cover under the nose, an area that on reconnaissance versions of the Spitfire markedly changes the outline of the underside of the fuselage and that on a model tends to be the weakest place in terms of shape. The Spitfire PR Mk XIX was the unarmed photo-reconnaissance version powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. The task of such an aircraft was not combat but range and altitude, and the layout corresponded to that: fuel instead of cannons, an enlarged oil supply for long flights and, on later machines, a pressurized cabin as well. The enlarged oil tank called for a deeper cover under the nose, which is typical of reconnaissance Spitfires and tells them apart from the fighter versions at first glance.
The fit into the plastic is what decides. The original shape on the model has to be sanded flat, and only then will the resin part seat with no step. Sand gradually and keep testing the mating surface dry, as on a part that sits on a curved fuselage an unevenness is noticed only after painting. Fill the seam after gluing with thin putty or a drop of cyanoacrylate glue, which you sand over once dry; the two materials sand at different rates, so proceed with fine paper and rather take longer. Then go over the transition with an undercoat, which will reveal any discrepancy sooner than the final shade. Reconnaissance Spitfires carried overall blue finishes on which every wave of the surface is visible, so the preparation pays off.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.
