A self-adhesive masking set from SX-Art for the model of the twin-engine Su-27 fighter or the carrier-based Su-33 in 1:72 scale. Unlike the usual masking sets, this one does not concern the glazing but exclusively the engine exhaust nozzles. It is neither a kit nor resin replacement nozzles but a sheet of masks that separate the metal shades of the nozzles from the color of the airframe.
The nozzles have a completely different finish from the rest of the airplane: metal and heat-discolored shades are applied separately, usually in several coats and often with metallic paints that are hard to overspray. Without a mask, either the metal shade reaches the airframe through a scattered edge or, the other way round, the airframe color creeps onto the rim of the nozzle. On a twin-engine subject with the nozzles set well apart, the whole procedure has to be done twice, which draws masking by hand out further still. A pre-cut mask respects the shape of the nozzle ring and holds the edge all the way round. The exact extent of the sheet is not stated here.
Finish spraying the nozzles first and let the varnish cure thoroughly, because metallic paints are sensitive to the touch. Then fit the mask onto the finished nozzle and press the edge down all the way round. Spray thinly and at a right angle so that the metallic surface does not clog. The order can also be reversed, that is, the nozzles masked before the airframe is sprayed, which tends to be more practical with light camouflage. Take the mask off carefully, as metallic varnishes peel easily.
