A Su-33 ladder, 1:72, LP Models

The LP Models resin accessory for 1:72 scale adds a boarding ladder to the cabin to a model of the carrier-based Su-33. A model of the aircraft is not part of the package; it is a separate element of ground, or rather deck, service for completing a finished model.

What the accessory is for

The Su-33 is the single-seat carrier-based variant of the Su-27 family, adapted for operation from an aircraft carrier: it has folding wings, forward horizontal surfaces and an arrestor hook. Both on deck and on a ground apron a ladder is brought up to the cabin, because the entry is high above the ground. On a model this is a small thing with a large effect: it suggests scale, fills the emptiness at the fuselage and gives a scene a story. It comes into its own on a display-case base just as well as on a section of flight deck, which with carrier-based aircraft is among the most rewarding diorama subjects.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that the remnants of the mold release agent disappear; without that neither the paint nor the primer will hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter, do not break them off, and protect your airways when sanding. They are glued with super glue, that is, cyanoacrylate, because ordinary cement for plastic does not act on resin. After the primer, apply the paint in thin layers, so that the fine rungs are not flooded. With carrier-based equipment it pays to reckon with the effect of salt water: slight maps of salt bloom and rusty traces on the metal look natural on deck, only do not overdo them.
