A photo-etched metal set in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a kit of a tank but a detail accessory aimed at the protective plates that ring the turret of the Panzer IV medium tank. Etched metal holds a thickness matching the scale, which makes the upper edge of the plate and its flange look faithful, whereas a plastic part tends to be noticeably thicker. Bent metal also follows the rounded shape of the turret better.
The turret skirts were part of the Schürzen protective set introduced from 1943. The plates ringed the sides and the rear of the turret and shielded them from anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge ammunition. At the rear they had hinged doors so that the crew could open the hatches in the back wall of the turret. The frame with the plates was often damaged, so vehicles in the field went about with parts missing or bent.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard mat and never break them out by twisting. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two steel rulers. A natural look comes from bending the individual plates slightly, and you can leave one or two out altogether, because they were commonly lost in the field. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue; on the hangers a small drop of two-part epoxy holds better. Degrease the metal before painting and use a base coat intended for metals, and only then acrylic or enamel, followed by a wash and pigments.
This is a detail accessory, not a complete kit of a vehicle. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.
