An injection molded plastic kit of the UH-60J(SP) rescue helicopter in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. The boxing is issued as an anniversary edition tied to the rescue unit from Chitose. The (SP) designation in the name refers to a special configuration of the machine. The UH-60J is the Japanese version of the multirole helicopter of the Sikorsky S-70 and UH-60 family, built in Japan under license and operated for search and rescue. What sets it apart from the transport versions is the rescue equipment and the fit for long flights over the sea: a hoist by the side door, additional fuel and the matching navigation and communication systems. The basis of the design stays common to the whole family, that is, a four-blade main rotor, two turboshaft engines above the cabin and fixed landing gear. Rescue service machines usually fly in a striking finish that makes them easier to spot.
With helicopters the glazing and the rotor decide the result. Mask the cabin glazing precisely along the frames, and for the curved sections narrow strips of masking tape laid on one after another work well. Leave the main rotor blades to be glued on at the very end, and while gluing watch that they all sit at the same angle, otherwise the model looks crooked once it is set in the display case. The inside of the cabin is clearly visible through the glazing, so it pays to paint the interior and to bring it out with a wash before the fuselage is closed. The decals of an anniversary edition belong on a gloss coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
