Universal perforated inner rims 1:72 — photo-etched set from AML

A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer AML for refining the main wheels of aircraft models in 1:72 scale. The perforated inner rims of wheels are among the details that injection-molded plastic cannot render faithfully in a scale as small as this, as the lightening holes are usually only suggested by depressions, or missing altogether. A thin photo-etched part with cleanly etched holes gives the wheels a scale fineness that shows clearly on a finished model, especially on aircraft with exposed main wheels. The set is designed as universal, so it is not tied to a single particular kit.

Working with the photo-etched parts

• Separate the part from the fret with a sharp knife on a hard surface and sand the remainder of the tab down with a fine file.
• Degrease the photo-etched part before gluing; alcohol or mineral spirits is enough.
• Glue it with a small drop of cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin, or with a gel glue for photo-etched parts.
• Before painting, spray the part with a thin coat of primer, and the paint then holds reliably even on metal.
