About product

The US Navy F-14A Tomcat in 1:72 scale (FineMolds)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary American carrier fighter in 1:72 scale, built on a modern mold from the second half of the last decade. FineMolds approached the subject with the usual Japanese care: fine engraved surface detail, accurate fit between parts and a well thought-out solution for the moving sections. The variable-geometry wings are movable, so the model can be displayed both spread and swept, and some of the access panels on the nose can be built open. The box holds plastic sprues, clear parts and decals for US Navy carrier fighter squadrons.

The real subject

The F-14 Tomcat was a two-seat carrier fighter of the US Navy, designed above all for the long-range defense of a naval formation. Its characteristic feature is the variable-geometry wing, which allowed a slow and safe approach to a carrier deck and at the same time a high speed in combat. The F-14A version was the first production variant and formed the backbone of the naval fighter arm for most of the type's service. This release depicts a machine in the later period of service, when Tomcats flew in an unobtrusive gray scheme with muted, low-contrast markings that had replaced the earlier colorful squadron insignia.

Building and painting tips

Parts that fit accurately make the work easier, but still give attention to installing the intakes and joining the fuselage sections, where this type always takes the most work. Decide in advance whether you want to leave the wings movable, and when painting bear in mind that areas which have to be painted are exposed at the root. Paint and pick out the cockpit before you close it up with the clear parts, and protect those with a mask. A low-contrast gray scheme calls for discipline: shade the individual panels only slightly, otherwise the model looks unconvincing. Lay the decals on a gloss varnish, as muted markings will otherwise give silvery edges. Keep the weathering restrained, with the emphasis on the exhaust areas and the streaks on the lower fuselage.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American carrier equipment in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want a modern mold with movable wings
  • Anyone interested in low-contrast gray schemes and fine weathering
  • Builders who will appreciate accurate parts and fine engraving

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The variable-geometry wing can be set, so the model can be displayed both spread and swept. Bear that in mind when painting the root areas.

It is a modern mold from the second half of the last decade, not an old reissue. That shows in the fine engraving and the accurate fit between parts.

The unobtrusive gray scheme of the later period of service, with muted, low-contrast squadron markings.

The parts fit accurately, but on this type the most work always goes into installing the intakes and joining the fuselage sections. For a modeler with basic experience it is manageable.
