About product

USAF Boeing B-52G Stratofortress, 1:72, Modelcollect

Injection-molded plastic kit of the American eight-engine strategic bomber from the Chinese manufacturer Modelcollect, which specializes in large and unusual subjects of modern military hardware. The box holds a great many gray plastic sprues, clear parts, two photo-etched frets and decals. The model offers a detailed flight deck with photo-etched instrument panels and consoles, opening bomb bay doors and hatches, landing gear and underwing pylons with missiles. The size of the finished model is essential information: a span of roughly 783 mm (almost 80 cm), a length of about 673 mm and a height of some 172 mm. Even in 1:72 this is a colossus that will not fit an ordinary display case, so allow for that before you buy.

The real subject

The B-52 Stratofortress is one of the longest-serving combat aircraft in aviation history. It appeared in the 1950s and the US Air Force still flies it; with upgrades, service is planned to roughly 2050, about a hundred years after the type first appeared. Today's crews therefore fly aircraft that their grandfathers already flew. The G version was the most numerous variant of the Cold War and brought a number of visible changes: a vertical tail shortened by about 2.4 m, an integral (wet) wing with a substantially larger fuel load, a larger nose radome and the tail gunner moved forward into the main cabin, from where he operated the rear guns remotely. This boxing captures the later shape of the aircraft with the electro-optical viewing system under the nose and underwing missiles.

Building and painting tips

Because of the size of the parts the fuselage and wings have to be glued carefully. Dry-fit the joints first, support the large areas and let them dry thoroughly. Glue with liquid cement for plastic, then fill and sand the seams on the large smooth surfaces. Apply primer before painting; the typical scheme is a multi-tone camouflage with a gray or white underside. Spray with an airbrush, put the decals on a gloss coat and seal them with a matte one. Pick out the panel lines with a fine paneliner. The finished model is long and heavy, so have a sturdy display base and enough room ready.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Cold War air power and strategic bombers
  • Modelers who want a genuine giant in 1:72 in their collection
  • More advanced builders (long joints, photo-etch, a high parts count)
  • Anyone with a truly large display case, because the span is almost 80 cm

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Really big: a span of roughly 783 mm, a length of about 673 mm and a height of some 172 mm. Even though it is only 1:72, this is one of the largest aircraft models you can build. Please check the dimensions of your display case first.

The most obvious change is the vertical tail, shortened by about 2.4 meters. The G also brought an integral (wet) wing with a substantially larger fuel load, a larger nose radome, and the tail gunner moved forward into the main cabin, from where he operated the rear armament remotely.

Yes. The type appeared in the 1950s and the US Air Force still flies it, with service planned to roughly 2050. Today it is the newer H version that serves; the G version captured by this model was retired after the end of the Cold War.

Rather not. The large parts, long joints, high parts count and photo-etched fret call for patience and experience with bigger models.
