The third package from the range of non-rigid K-class airships in 1:720 scale. According to the name it focuses on machines with special, that is unusual markings, and names three particular examples. It is precisely unusual markings that tend to be the reason modelers obtain several packages of the same type, because the model then differs at first glance in a display case. The finished model is around ten centimeters and goes well with the sister packages of the same class.
The K-class airships were non-rigid designs in which the shape is held by the overpressure of the gas in the envelope. The gondola under the envelope carried the crew and the power units, and the tail surfaces provided directional stability. The US Navy used them mainly for patrol flights over the sea and to escort ship formations, where long endurance and the ability to fly slowly low over the surface were valued. The individual machines differed in equipment and in external markings during their service, which is an attractive subject for a modeler.
With this package the center of gravity of the work is the markings, so pay extra attention to the surface. Sand and polish the envelope smooth, apply a uniform base coat and put a gloss coat on before the decals, otherwise matte edges will appear under the film. Lay the large number and letter decals onto plenty of water so that they can be aligned, and draw the excess off with a paper tissue from the center toward the edges. On the curve of the envelope a softener helps, and on the larger motifs so does a fine cut with a scalpel, so that the film does not crease. Finally seal everything with a matte or semi-gloss overcoat, which evens the surface out.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
