A masking set in 1:72 scale aimed at the national insignia and markings of a model of the Japanese twin-engine Tachikawa Ki-54 aircraft. It is not a kit but an accessory: you stick the masks onto a cured finish, spray the markings in paint and take the masks off. Against decals this approach has two advantages - the markings are part of the finish, so they do not silver and do not wrinkle on broken-up areas, and they also stand up to later sanding, chipping and weathering. It is precisely in 1:72 scale that applying small decals is most sensitive.
The Tachikawa Ki-54 was a Japanese twin-engine all-metal aircraft used for crew training and for liaison and light transport duty. It was built in several forms according to purpose and served throughout its existence rather in the second line than in combat. The Allied code name for the type was Hickory. Machines of this role tended to carry fairly simple markings, where the final impression rests above all on the cleanliness of the way the insignia are rendered.
The base has to be smooth, degreased and fully cured. Spray a thin coat of white or a light base under the red, otherwise the marking will darken over a colored finish - red shades have poor covering power. Lay the paint on in several very thin coats and at right angles to the mask, so that it does not bleed under the edge. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, and pull it at a shallow angle backward along the surface. On the curved areas of the fuselage press the mask down with a soft tool all the way around beforehand. At the end go over the model with a clear coat, which brings the sheen of the markings into line with the surroundings and prepares the surface for weathering.
The package holds only the masking set. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
