A poster is one of the simplest ways to give a diorama a time and a place. A bare wall or a sheet-metal hoarding looks neutral; as soon as a poster with a period motif hangs on it, the viewer immediately places the scene in a particular era. It finds use on billboards, on facades and in passageways, in shop windows and the entrances of cinemas, in video rental shops and in the interiors of rooms and clubs. The colored area also works as a compositional accent that can balance an otherwise gray urban scene.
Cut the posters out with a scalpel along the outline; with period billposting it pays to leave a narrow white margin. They are glued down with PVA glue applied in a thin layer so that the paper does not ripple. It helps credibility if you do not stick the posters down exactly level but slightly askew, overlapping and in several layers, the way a billboard really looks. You can tear the edges slightly, lift the corners with the tip of a knife and age the whole thing with a very weak wash or dust pigment. Matte it at the end so that the surface does not shine.
