This is not a kit of a tank but a supplementary photo-etched set in 1:35 scale. It replaces the plastic grilles over the engine compartment of the Soviet heavy tanks of the KV line. The set is made of thin photo-etched metal, so it can do what injection-molded plastic cannot: the grille is really see-through, has a realistic thickness and does not look like a solid blind part with a suggested texture.
The engine compartment of the KV line tanks was covered by protective grilles, which are conspicuous on a model because they lie on a horizontal surface directly in view from above. An injection mold can only create them as relief on a solid plate. Once painted, that is noticed at first glance, because the grille has no depth and light does not pass through it. A photo-etched part removes that difference and it is one of the simplest modifications with a visible effect.
Separate the parts with a sharp knife on a hard surface rather than by twisting, so that the fine mesh does not ripple. Make the bends in an etch bender or between two blades. Before gluing, degrease the metal and apply a primer for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth brass. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied in a minimal amount, as classic cement for plastic does not work on metal. If there is nothing under the grille, it pays to darken the space or to fill it, because the new part will be seen through. After spraying, a dark wash that brings out the texture helps, along with drybrushing on the edges.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The model, glue, primer and paints are not included in the package. Further photo-etched grille sets for these vehicles exist, differing in the set number.
