A set of historical figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box. The theme is Ottoman cavalry of the 16th and 17th centuries and the set carries the designation set 2. It will find a use in a diorama as well as as a unit on a game table.
Not every mounted figure has to be in movement. In a scene with artillery the space behind the firing position is rewarding too: an assembly area where the horses stand, the riders dismount and the scene slows down. Such an arrangement gives a diorama a second focus and creates a contrast against the concentrated work of the crew at the piece. In practice that means looser spacing, figures turned toward one another instead of all in one direction, and a lower density of detail in the terrain, so that the rear does not compete with the main scene.
Before painting, check the mating surfaces; with mounted castings the gap between the rider and the saddle tends to be most conspicuous precisely after painting. Fill the joint with a minimum of putty and sand it smooth. When painting, proceed across the whole group at once: all the horses in one tone, then in a second, and only then the clothing. A batch procedure keeps a unit matched in color and is considerably faster than finishing the figures one by one. Apply the final matte varnish only once the wash has dried completely.
The set is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, bases and terrain material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
