Roden 1:144 Convair NB-36H Crusader is a plastic kit of the American flying testbed that carried a nuclear reactor on board.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of an exceptionally large American aircraft in 1:144 scale from Roden. Although the scale is small, the model has respectable dimensions thanks to the span of the real subject. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The NB-36H came about by converting a six-engine Convair B-36 bomber into a flying testbed. Its task was to verify how a nuclear reactor behaves in flight and how reliably the shielding of the crew cabin works. The reactor did not power the engines; it was purely a test load. The original nose was replaced by a heavily shielded cabin with small windows of multi-layer glass, and conspicuous cooling intakes were added to the fuselage. The machine flew in the second half of the 1950s and carried the nickname Crusader. The powerplant stayed as it was: piston engines in a pusher arrangement completed with paired jet engine pods under the wing.
With a large span, a firm and above all symmetrical joint between wing and fuselage is crucial; it pays to strengthen the joint with a bonded-in stiffener and let it cure thoroughly. The cabin glazing is masked before spraying. Extensive metal surfaces need a perfectly smooth base, because metallic paints bring out every scratch; they are sanded gradually through several grits and polished. Decals hold best on a gloss base and, once dry, are overcoated with matte or semi-matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
