Crates are a rewarding thing in a diorama. They fill an empty spot by a wall or on a load bed, they give a scene a sense of scale and yet they do not overpower the main model. This set brings eight pieces in 1:35 scale, that is, enough for a stacked pile to come out of them rather than a single lonely piece. The Dynamit designation in the name distinguishes the motif within a range that also holds crates with a different subject.
According to the name these are wooden parts cut by laser. Wood has the advantage over plastic that the grain of the material is really there, so it does not have to be painted. The parts are released from the carrier sheet, the remains of the tab are leveled with fine sandpaper and the walls are put together into the shape of a crate according to the maker's instructions. They are glued with PVA wood glue or with cyanoacrylate glue; PVA gives more time to line the edges up, cyanoacrylate holds at once. The cut edges tend to be darker after the laser, so depending on your intention either sand them or leave them as a trace of wear.
Wood soaks up paint, so count on the first coat disappearing into the material. If you want to keep the grain, reach for thinned shades and wood stain tones rather than an opaque finish. It is good to seal the finished crates with varnish at the end, so that the edges do not rub.
