An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the British manufacturer Airfix. The real subject is the North American F-86 Sabre jet fighter in the late F-86F-40 version. For single-engine fighters, 1:48 is the most widespread compromise between the size of the model and the amount of detail that can reasonably be worked out.
The F-86 Sabre is a single-seat, single-engine jet fighter with a swept wing and an intake in the nose. It was powered by a General Electric turbojet of the J47 series, and the gun armament was concentrated in the nose on either side of the intake duct. The F-86F-40 version received a wing of greater span completed with leading-edge slats, which improved its behavior at low speeds and increased its range. It was precisely this late version that entered service with a number of foreign users, and some of the machines came from license production as well.
The Sabre is largely silver, and that governs the build: a polished metal surface forgives nothing, so sand the joints of the fuselage and the wing smooth and check the surface under a hard light before painting. Paint the intake duct and close it up before you glue the fuselage halves together. Build the metallic shades on a smooth, ideally black gloss base and spray them in thin coats; each panel can be set apart with a different shade of metal, and that brings the model to life. Give the areas a gloss varnish before the decals, or silvering is a risk. Paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays separately before the final assembly.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
