Fretsaw, Round, Large, the Frame (Pelikan)

A fretsaw is the basic tool for the fine cutting of shapes that a straight cut cannot produce: curves, cut-outs inside an area, parting thin materials. This item is the large form of the frame with a round profile from the brand Pelikan. It is the frame alone: a saw blade is a consumable and is bought separately, which is usual with fretsaws and in practice an advantage, because one frame outlasts a great many blades.

Use

• Cutting curves and irregular shapes in thin plastic, plywood, veneer or light metals.
• Internal cut-outs: the blade is threaded through a pre-drilled hole and only then clamped into the frame.
• Parting castings, sections and strip where an ordinary saw is too coarse.
• Work that needs a large throat depth, that is a greater distance between the cut and the back of the saw.

How to work with it

The blade is clamped with the teeth pointing down, that is toward the handle, so that the saw cuts on the downward stroke; that way the blade does not jam and leads the cut cleanly. The tension of the blade is crucial: a slack blade breaks and wanders out of the cut. Hold the material firmly, ideally on a cutting mat with a cut-out or in a jig, and lead the saw lightly, without pressure; the tooth should do the work, not the force of your hand. For thin materials choose a finer blade, for thicker and softer materials a coarser one.
