Pre-cut masking templates from the SX-Art brand for a model of the Su-25 attack aircraft in 1:48 from the maker Zvezda. The set follows the shapes of a particular kit, so tracing and cutting tape with a scalpel falls away. It is not a model of the aircraft but an add-on to building and painting it.
The Su-25 is a twin-engined subsonic aircraft for supporting troops on the ground. It has a straight wing with a great many pylons, engines lying against the sides of the fuselage and sturdy landing gear for operating from unprepared surfaces. The surface of the airframe is heavily divided by panels and rivet lines, which tells when it is painted.
The multi-tone camouflage on the Su-25 is made up of relatively large fields whose boundaries run across the panels and the rivet lines. It is exactly here that the typical mistake arises: a modeler leads the boundary along an engraved line, because tape sticks down better that way, and yet on the real aircraft the pattern ignores the panels and passes across them. A pre-cut template holds the pattern in its original shape and, above all, the same on both sides of the fuselage and on both wings. The second critical area is the joint of the engine nacelles with the fuselage, where the surface breaks and tape tends to lift. Stick the template on there in sections and run a toothpick over the joint. Anyone who wants to bring the pattern to life can add a few blotches freehand with very thinned paint once the masks are off. Once unmasked, it pays to revive the rivets under the edge gently, so that the transition does not look like a sticker.
This is a masking add-on, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
