A resin accessory for modelers building the Mercedes-Benz 170 light passenger and staff car in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of the vehicle nor a kit — it is a replacement part that swaps the original plastic hood for a casting of the engine cover with a tarpaulin thrown over the engine compartment. Resin makes it possible to model softly falling fabric, the sag between the supporting points and the small creases and ties, which injection molded plastic manages only in a simplified way.
An engine under a tarpaulin was a common sight on field vehicles: the cover protected the unit from dust, rain and cold. On a model it is above all a storytelling feature — the car looks parked up, as part of a column or of a staff post, and the accessory at the same time neatly hides details of the engine compartment that would otherwise have to be built up.
Wash the part in lukewarm water with dish soap first, so that the remains of the mold release agent are removed — otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and never break them; then level the surface with a file and fine abrasive paper. Sand with your airways protected and ideally wet. It is glued with super glue (cyanoacrylate), as plastic cement has no effect on resin. Apply a primer before spraying. Paint the fabric in a different shade from the sheet metal parts of the car, so that the tarpaulin separates visually; bring out the folds with a dark wash and the edges with a dry brush. Dust pigment on the lower areas unifies the accessory with the rest of the model.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and the base model of the vehicle is not part of the package. Glue, paints and other accessories are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
