An injection molded plastic kit from the Chinese maker Takom in 1:35 scale. The subject is the German experimental weapon carrier Versuchsträger VT 1-2, one of the most unusual shapes that appear among the postwar vehicles on offer to modelers. The model will be valued by collectors of prototypes and technical dead ends, because the turretless silhouette is recognized at once and does not get lost among ordinary main battle tanks in a display case.
The Versuchsträger came about in Germany in the 1970s as a trial vehicle for testing the concept of a fighting vehicle without a rotating turret. The weapons were mounted rigidly in the hull and aiming was done by turning and tilting the whole vehicle, for which a very powerful drive and fast steering were needed. The aim was to reach a low silhouette, a lower weight and a faster reaction than in the classic layout. The vehicle never entered series production, but the findings of the program fed into the further development of German armored vehicles.
The large smooth faces of the hull dominate the model, so pay attention to the glued seams and to sanding them down; on finished paint every one of them would stay visible. Assemble and paint the running gear before the tracks go on and before the wheel wells are closed up. Use a primer, which will reveal flaws in the surface. On a trial vehicle a sober finish suggests itself: a single-color shade, a fine brightening of the horizontal faces, a discreet lift of the panels and only slight dusting. Heavy battle aging would look out of place on a prototype; a test ground is a better story than the mud of a battlefield.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
