The set contains a multiple bomb rack fitted with laser-guided GBU-12 bombs for a model of the Dassault Rafale in 1:144 scale. It is a resin detail accessory, not a model of an aircraft. Kits in this small scale tend to be sparing with underwing armament, and yet it is the armament that decides whether a model looks like a particular machine on a particular mission or merely like the general shape of an aircraft.
The GBU-12 is a laser-guided bomb of the Paveway II family built on a conventional bomb of the 500-pound class. At the front it carries a head with a laser seeker and control surfaces, at the rear folding fins that extend its glide range after release. It is guided onto a reflected beam from a designator, whether from the launch aircraft or from another source. It is among the most widespread precision munitions of Western air forces and the Rafale carries it together with the domestic AASM kit; on a multiple rack the aircraft then carries more rounds on a single station.
Count on a bomb in 1:144 scale being only a few millimeters long. Cut it from the casting block with a sharp knife or a fine saw, holding the part with soft-gripping tweezers and working over a bounded surface. Sanding only the mating surface is enough, otherwise the suggested fins will disappear. Wash the castings in soapy water before painting and spray them with a thin primer. Dose the super glue with the tip of a toothpick; a drop straight from the bottle would flood the part. For painting, a light gray base for the bomb with thin colored bands is proven, and at this scale the bands are suggested better with a single-hair brush than with a decal.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
