This injection-molded plastic kit from the American maker AMT represents a funny car class drag racing machine of the 1970s, built on the silhouette of the Chevrolet Vega, in 1:25 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a production car but a racing machine whose body shares nothing with the original except its shape.
Funny car is an American drag racing class that came into being in the 1960s and came fully into its own in the 1970s. Under a lightened body copying the shape of a production car and tipped back in one piece are a tube frame, massive rear tires and a supercharged V8 burning methanol or nitromethane. The Chevrolet Vega, meanwhile, was a small economy car in civilian life, but its silhouette became one of the favorite shapes for this class thanks to its short wheelbase and angular forms.
The tube frame is the foundation, so glue it on a flat surface and keep checking that the model does not stand crooked. Nip the parts off with nippers and sand away the marks left by the gates. Wash the body with soapy water, spray on a primer and then thin coats of paint; a deep gloss shade, a metallic or a pearl finish all suit these cars. Stir metallic paint thoroughly, as the pigment settles to the bottom, and apply it only onto a smooth base. Paint the chrome and engine parts before the frame is closed up, as you will not reach them later.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
