A large-format portrait bust cast in modeling resin in 1:10 scale. The name refers to a period expression for a seasoned soldier and the sculptural treatment matches it: a strong face with lined modeling is the main carrier of the message and the gear forms a second plane. The bust is not supplied painted and the result stands or falls with the painting, not with the building.
Resin busts are divided into several castings so that undercut details can be molded, usually the head separately, the torso separately and any small accessories. Before you start, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry thoroughly; unwashed mold release agent is the most common cause of paint peeling off. Cut the casting blocks off with a modeling saw, level the mating surfaces with a file and align them dry. They are bonded with super glue. Fill the seam between the head and the torso and sand it back wet, so that no dust is raised. A unifying primer is a mandatory step on a bust, because only on a matte base will you see whether the modeling of the face is clean.
Build the face in layers: a mid flesh tone, with glazed shadows into the eye sockets, at the nasal folds and under the lower lip, and highlights on the raised surfaces. In a large scale it pays to work with very thinned transitions so that the skin does not look like plastic. Separate the beard and the hair with a thin glaze and a dry brush, and leave the eyes until the end. The uniform cloth holds a matte tone with a visible texture of the fabric, the leather webbing will take a fine sheen and the metal accessories are brought to life with a polished pigment or a dry brush. The weathering should be discreet: a dark wash into the folds and dust only on the lower areas. Fit the bust to its base only once the painting is finished.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, putty and base accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
