A portrait bust of a British desert scout in 1:10 scale, cast in modeling resin. A desert theme puts an unusual task before a modeler: sun-burned skin, faded cloth and omnipresent fine dust. The casting is supplied unpainted and the whole impression only comes about in the painting.
Busts of this format are cast in parts so that the undercut details around the scarf, the collar and the gear stay legible. Wash the parts first in lukewarm soapy water, as mold release agent from the mold would otherwise stop the paint from anchoring. Cut the casting blocks off with a modeling saw and level the surfaces with a file, try the fit dry and only then bond them with super glue. Fill the seams and sand them back wet so that you do not raise dust. A unifying thin primer is the last step before painting; desert shades are easier to build on a light base than on a gray one.
Build the skin with glazes into warm tones, as a tan cannot be mixed in one shade but comes about by layering. Deepen the shadows into the eye sockets and under the cheekbones, put the highlights on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and the chin, and leave the eyes and the stubble until the end. The cloth is the second main task here: khaki and sandy fabric should be noticeably faded on the tops of the folds and on the shoulders, with soft transitions. A scarf or headgear may carry a different tone from the uniform, which brings the bust to life. Pick the leather webbing and the metal buckles out with a light sheen and a dry brush. The weathering consists mainly of dust: a very fine pigment settled into the folds and on the lower areas, never evenly over the whole surface. Leave fitting to the base to the very end.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, putty and pigments are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
