About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 British Soldier, El Alamein 1942

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The casting is supplied unpainted and unassembled. The assembly is short and all the difficulty shifts to preparing the surface and to the painting.

The sculpting and the painting task

A desert subject of 1942 works with a very narrow palette. That is exactly its difficulty: khaki cloth, sandy weathering and tanned skin all lie close together, and if they are not given sufficiently different tonal values the bust will go gray into a single area. The solution is to shift each material deliberately elsewhere: the skin into warmer tones, the cloth into cooler ones, the dust into the lightest value. The tan tends to be uneven and strongest on the upper part of the face. The metal buckles, clasps and any parts of the equipment are the only dark contrasting points and it is good to let them stand out. What follows describes the sculpting and painting of the casting, not the history of the campaign.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, fill the parting seams with modeling putty and sand them with fine sandpaper, best of all wet and with your airways protected. Join the parts with super glue. Apply a thin primer, and with desert subjects a lighter shade helps. Build the skin in many thinned layers: a base, then highlights on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and shadows into the eye sockets. Paint the eyes right at the start and tone the white of the eye down to gray. Lay the beard and the hair on as a glaze over the finished skin. Unify the cloth with a base tone and add shadows into the folds and highlights onto the edges, but leave small differences of shade legible so that the fabric does not look like a plastic shell. Apply the pigments sparingly with a dry brush into the folds and toward the lower edge. Darken the metal parts at the end and add a reflection. Fit the base only once the painting is complete.

Who the bust is for

  • Modelers interested in British desert subjects
  • Anyone interested in 1:10 scale, which allows fine shading of skin

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Most often because the skin, the cloth and the dust all lie in a similar tonal value. Shift the base tone of each material in a different direction and you will raise the contrast between them.

Less than it seems. Pigment belongs in the folds and toward the lower edge of the bust. An overall application kills the painting of the face, into which you have put the most work.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Adhesives intended for polystyrene will not soften resin and the joint would not hold.
