1:10 Crusader with mace is a bust of a crusader with a mace by the Black Dog model brand, meant for painting.
Responsibility details are not available.
The subject is a crusader with a mace, that is with a crushing weapon that horsemen and foot soldiers alike reached for wherever a cutting blow was not enough. The 1:10 scale is part of the name and matches a format in which even the broken-up surface of armor can be worked out.
The expeditions to the Levant ran from the end of the eleventh century and their participants came from various countries of western Europe. The characteristic mark was a surcoat with a cross, which at the same time protected the chain mail from the sun. The mace and weapons like it came to the fore because a blow with an edge against springy mail often only bruised, whereas a strike with a blunt head went through. Besides secular knights the expeditions were joined by religious military orders as well, which had rules of dress of their own.
Chain mail is the main discipline here: a dark base works well, over which the individual links are drawn out with a dry brush, and only then is the grime returned into the recesses. The cloth of the surcoat, by contrast, should be led flatly and cleanly, so that against the metal it comes across as soft. Draw the cross in thinly first and fill it in afterwards, as an overpainted edge shows at first glance. Leave the wood of the handle and the leather straps matte, otherwise the whole upper part of the bust will turn glassy.
