About product

1:10 German Infantry Russian Front WWII - a resin bust from Young Miniatures

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The subject is a German infantryman on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. What follows describes the sculpting and the painting task, that is, the cut of the uniform, the surfaces and the color scheme. The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The sculpting

The subject rests on heavy woolen cloth and on a face exposed to the weather. The deep folds of the outer garment, the collar, the webbing and the headgear are all modeled. In 1:10 scale even the fabric itself is visible, so it pays to suggest the texture of the wool with a dry brush and not to rely on a flat shade alone.

Preparing the casting and painting

Wash the casting free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and fill and sand the seams once the parts are aligned. Then apply a thin primer, preferably in two or three light coats.

Painting: start with the eyes and the skin. On a subject from a cold environment a cool base for the skin with warm accents on the nose, the ears, the cheeks and the knuckles is effective, but add them sparingly, or the result will look scalded. Paint the wool of the uniform strictly matte, make the transitions with glazes and lighten the edges of the folds only slightly. Set the leather webbing and the buckles apart with a higher sheen and a dark base under the metallic paint. Pick the beard and the hair out with a thin brush and a dry brush. The weathering should be discreet: dust, frost or mud only in the folds and on the shoulders. Finally pin the bust to a base.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters who want to practice painting wool and cool skin tones
  • Collectors of portrait busts in 1:10 scale
  • Modelers moving from vehicles to figures
  • Exhibitors looking for a piece on its own for a display case

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, brushes and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Shift the base into a cool tone and add warm accents only to the nose, the ears and the cheeks. A light glaze along the edges of the face also helps, but it has to stay translucent.

Super glue. Align the parts dry before gluing and fill any seam, so that it does not stand out after spraying.

The 1:10 scale is usual for competition figure painting, because it allows fine transitions on the face. The result stands or falls with careful surface preparation, though.
