About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 German Waffen SS Ardennes 1944 (II)

A collector's bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin, the second variant of the winter subject from this range. The casting is aligned and glued in several parts, so the building is short and all the work moves to the brush. In a large scale every transition of tone shows, which with busts is exactly the point.

Preparing the casting

Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a fine saw, run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them with wet sandpaper, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the seams after gluing, otherwise they will show in the painting. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue.

Painting the face and the winter gear

After a thin coat of primer, build the face in thinned layers. A winter subject suits a cooler treatment of the skin: shift the base slightly toward pink on the nose, the ears and the cheekbones, but keep the lighting cooler than on a summer subject, or the result will not sit with its surroundings. The darker transitions belong in the eye sockets, under the nose and under the jaw. Paint the eyes only once the skin is finished, with the thinnest brush and in two passes.

The camouflage pattern on the smock is the most demanding part and it pays to approach it systematically: first the base tone of the cloth, then the larger blotches, then the smaller ones, and only at the end the finest stippling. The pattern follows the folds, so the blotches have to follow the shape of the cloth rather than lie on the surface like a decal. Once the pattern is finished, unify the whole with a thinned glaze that calms the sharp transitions. The helmet, the straps and the small metal elements come last. Winter weathering means damp and mud on the lower edges rather than white snow; fine light pigments in the folds and a dark wash into the hollows will do more than an overall lightening. Pin the finished bust to a base and display it at eye level.

Who the bust is for

  • Collectors of portrait busts from the period of the Second World War.
  • Figure painters who want to try a camouflage pattern in a large scale.
  • Modelers practicing a cool treatment of skin and winter weathering.
  • More experienced builders used to working with resin.

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It refers to the second variant of the same subject in the manufacturer's range. It is a separate bust, not an accessory to the first version.

From the base tone of the cloth through the large blotches to the smaller ones and finally to the stippling. The pattern has to follow the folds, otherwise it will look like a decal.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Cement for plastic does not soften resin.

It is not. It is supplied as a resin casting to assemble and paint.
